Recommendations

We put all our favorite things in Oxford on this Google map!

Food + Drink

On the Square

City Grocery -

An institution. Famous for their shrimp n grits. Excellent choice for brunch or dinner, reservations recommended. The bar (upstairs) is excellent and a famous hangout for local authors.

Ajax -

Classic southern food. Recommend getting a "meat and three" and starting with the fried pickles.

Proud Larrys -

Excellent, casual American food. Check the schedule to see if they have any live music.

Miscellanea -

New place, very cool. Try to avoid pictures before you go. Food is good, but would also be good for just drinks. Reservations recommended.

The Blind Pig -

Oxford's version of a dive bar. Great sandwiches.

The Growler -

Beer bar. Excellent selection.

The Coop -

Upstairs bar at the graduate... supposedly named after the other Manning brother. Great views of town.

Bottletree Bakery -

Local bakery with yummy danishes and other pastries. Can get crowded for brunch.

Heartbreak Coffee -

Best (and only) coffee shop on the square.

Just off the square

Jensei -

Sushi. Excellent. Try the tempura green beans or kadoma tuna.

Volta -

Greek. Great lunch spot. Try a frozen margarita, greek pimento cheese, or chicken souvlaki.

Snack Bar-

Menu always changes, but is always excellent. Reservations recommended.

Good Day Cafe -

Excellent burger. Cozy vibes. Recommend for lunch or dinner. Reservations for dinner recommended.

Chicory Market -

Not technically a restaurant, but an excellent local grocery store worth popping into.

Big Bad Breakfast -

Classic southern breakfast. Try grits, biscuits and gravy, and the creme brûlée grapefruit.

Further off the square (Taylor, MS)

Taylor, Mississippi is a 20 minute drive outside of town.

Taylor Grocery -

Highly recommend this famous catfish joint. Very kid friendly. Usually open for dinner Thursday-Sunday, but call before heading out! They may be closed for a private event (and they have no real social media presence).

It's unofficially BYOB, so bring some beer, pour it into a cup, and hang out on the porch while you wait for your table. With your catfish plate, try the fried okra, green beans, and collard greens.

Wonderbird Distillery -

Reservation required. Very cool distillery a 5 minute drive from "downtown" Taylor. Neither Anne or Jesse is a huge gin fan, but the Wonderbird gin's are made from rice, which makes it more "drinkable".

Grit -

Wonderful, upscale southern food. They do an excellent Sunday brunch.

BOOKS (AND BOOKISH THINGS)

The Oxford Square is anchored by four excellent local, independent bookstores, all part of the Square Books family.

Square Books is Jesse's first stop in Oxford. Plan to stay a while.

Off Square Books is the quirkier sibling, with discount books, games, and cookbooks.

Square Books Jr. is for all things kiddos. They have story time at 10 every Saturday morning. Intended for ages 0-6, but all ages welcome.

Rare Square Books is just above Jr. and has collectible and vintage books.

Many famous authors have called Oxford home, perhaps none more famous than William Faulkner. Visit his home (Rowan Oak), just off the square. The grounds themselves are beautiful, and you can also tour the home. If you have time and are up for a walk, take the trail through "Bailey's Woods" to the University Museum.
